We are group of citizens on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, who are organizing and advocating for a ceasefire in the Israel-Palestine conflict and increased humanitarian aid for the people of the Gaza Strip. Canada must intervene to end war crimes, death, arms deals, apartheid, occupation, and blockades, while actively pursuing a lasting and peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Our group condemns all forms of antisemitism and islamophobia. We believe Palestinians and Jews each teach us of the power of resistance and the courage and determination to survive the unimaginable. Town of Bridgewater, NS issues statement calling for a sustainable ceasefire.

NEWS

January 16, 2024

SSCN is thankful that at the first council meeting of 2024 the Town of Bridgewater passed a motion to issue a statement supporting the Federal Government’s call for a “sustainable ceasefire”. Council made reference to last month's joint statement issued by Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Mayor David Mitchell added that “The Town of Bridgewater supports the position of our federal government and hopes that peace, a lasting cessation of fighting, along with the delivery of aid to the region materializes quickly.” We agree wholeheartedly.

While SSCN welcomes the release of this public statement, the council mentioned no plans to write directly to the Prime Minister’s Office regarding this matter, as we had requested, perhaps feeling it was no longer necessary after the joint statement was released for a Ceasefire. We hope that they still may decide to send a letter affirming their position that Canada must support all endeavors towards a ceasefire. For SSCN these endeavors include arms embargoes, the end of Canadian military support, sanctions against Israel and explicit support for the ICJ case of Genocide presented by South Africa.

SSCN echoes Mayor Mitchell’s condemnation of racism and hatred in our communities and we strongly support this message. We hope that this message reaches people in our community that need to hear it most and we are glad that the council made it.

We thank the Council for using their voice to echo so many other municipal voices across North America by calling for a Ceasefire. We believe that these are important first steps in creating a safer, less hostile world for the Palestinian people who are enduring unbelievable harm and death under Israel’s ongoing siege and hostilities. We hope the Canadian public and our governments at all levels continue to cultivate communities that are safe for people fleeing persecution. To this end we hope Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller changes his hostile stance towards Palestinians who will need to make Canada their new home through no fault of their own. We believe that Bridgewater can be the kind of community that accepts and adopts these newcomers to Canada and that the Bridgewater municipal council will foster this connection.

Palestine Children’s Relief Fund

Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), founded in 1991 by concerned humanitarians in the USA, provides free medical care to thousands of injured and ill children yearly who lack local access to care within the local health care system.  Over the years, we've sent over 2,000 affected children abroad for free medical care, sent thousands of international doctors and nurses to provide tens of thousands of children free medical care in local hospitals, and provided tens of thousands of children humanitarian aid and support they otherwise would not get.

PCRF's impact also includes establishing two pediatric cancer departments in Palestine, a new PICU and pediatric cardiology department in Ramallah, and many more critical projects to sustainably bolster the region's healthcare system. Our foundation relies on grassroots efforts, supported by a worldwide network of thousands of volunteers, to fulfill our humanitarian mission.  We are a volunteer-based nonprofit, so please join our efforts.
